Sari University of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources was established in 1973 under the name Higher School of Agricultural Engineering as an educational institution with the objective of providing higher education programs. It began its academic activities with three fields of study: General Agriculture, Forestry & Rangeland, and Animal Science. In 1979, following the merger of several educational institutions and approval by the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution, it became one of the founding units of the University of Mazandaran. Subsequently, after achieving significant educational and research standards, the institution was upgraded to the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and the Faculty of Natural Resources with the approval of the Higher Education Development Council. In 2004, after meeting additional development criteria, initial approval was granted for establishing the Sari Higher Education Complex of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. The following year, final approval was issued for the establishment of four faculties—Agricultural Sciences, Agricultural Engineering, Animal Sciences & Fisheries, and Natural Resources—along with two research institutes focusing on Rice & Citrus and Caspian Ecosystems. On December 2, 2010, based on a resolution of the Higher Education Development Council, the Rice & Citrus Research Institute was officially renamed the Agricultural Genetics and Biotechnology Research Institute.

About the University

Following the visit of the Ninth Government's Cabinet to the fertile province of Mazandaran and in line with the national policy of expanding educational equity, the establishment of Sari University of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources was approved as one of the province's development initiatives. This decision opened a new path toward the comprehensive advancement and sustainable development of the region. In 2006, the Higher Education Development Council officially approved the establishment of the university, and after the required infrastructure had been completed, the university officially began operating under its current name in 2008. Through continuous follow-up and the dedicated efforts of university administrators and specialists, the Tabarestan Technology Incubator Center was established in 2008. This was followed by the establishment of the Medicinal Plant Biotechnology Research Institute and the GIS & RS Research Institute in 2018, and later the Nuclear Agriculture Research Institute and the Food Security Research Institute in 2023. Today, the university educates highly qualified specialists through 16 undergraduate majors, 51 master's degree programs, and 28 doctoral programs. In addition to its educational mission, the university conducts impactful research in areas such as developing new crop varieties, producing certified seeds for strategic agricultural products, establishing collections of medicinal and aromatic plants, preserving the genetic resources of native plant species, supporting technology-based startups through its Technology Incubator and Innovation Center, and promoting knowledge-based entrepreneurship. These activities contribute to the sustainable development and prosperity of Iran, particularly in the agricultural sector, while fulfilling one of the university's most important social responsibilities: safeguarding public health through healthy nutrition and strengthening national food security.

Considering the need for the comprehensive development of Mazandaran Province, such broad and continuous progress is both expected and essential. It is hoped that, through divine blessings and the dedicated efforts of university leaders, faculty members, researchers, and staff, Sari University of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources will continue to achieve greater scientific excellence and research distinction in the years ahead.
